Personally, I am a huge fan of disgusting critters.

Wait. Scratch that.

I have no love for REAL-LIFE spiders, earthworms, toads, and head lice, but the Disgusting Critters SERIES OF NON-FICTION BOOKS by Elise Gravel is the key to my heart.

I’m super extra excited because the books have started appearing in paperback, which makes it easier for me to splurge and collect them all. This one, The Spider, came out last month—perfect timing for some Halloween fun and learning since creepy-crawly spiders are a traditional part of every spooky tableau.

In The Spider, we learn tons and tons of facts about the creatures—which are, by the way, NOT insects. Each fact is punctuated with a funny illustration that lightens the scientific mood and personifies the creature. Gravel’s illustration style is bold and colorful, and I’m amazed at how she creates appeal from such—ummm—polyped source material.

If you know a child who devours nonfiction like a spider devours her mate, this book will certainly satisfy. (Eww.)
