My kids and I are getting ready to flow with Good Night Yoga: A Pose-By-Pose Bedtime Story, which is a fantastic way to wind down after a busy day of summering.
So much thought and care have gone into constructing this lovely book. There are several ways to approach it as a read aloud. Each page has some bold text that can be read through as a narrative, with subtle rhythm and rhyme scheme smoothing the ride to dreamland. ("The sun in the sky is going down and the clouds float by. The stars sparkle brightly as the moon rises high.")
Each page also has brief instructions for performing a simple pose that is linked to the story (sun, cloud, star, moon). The instructions are crafted to put focus on breath, form, and visualization.
In the back of the book, the “Good Night Yoga Flow” is laid out on a two-page spread that can be used as a reference if you are leading your little yogis in the entire eleven-pose sequence, which incorporates stretching and balance and ends with a relaxing Child’s Pose.
Finally—and this is my favorite part—there is a guided meditation...a “Cloud Journey" ending in, “Sweet dreams."
And the illustrations? I mean, how marvelous is that cover?! The pictures are colorful, diverse, and instructive. They make a clear bridge between each pose and the object or animal that anchors it to the story and are a lot of fun to look at.
